Battlefield 6 Devs Confident It Will Outshine Battlefield 2042
A producer at DICE has expressed strong confidence that Battlefield 6 will be far more successful than its predecessor, Battlefield 2042. Following a widely praised open beta in August, the game’s October 10 launch has become one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year. The studio is determined not to repeat the same mistakes that left Battlefield 2042 with disappointing reviews.
Why Battlefield 2042 Struggled to Win Fans
When Battlefield 2042 launched in November 2021, it promised massive-scale battles with up to 128 players. However, the removal of a traditional campaign and technical shortcomings disappointed longtime fans. The game’s reception quickly turned sour, with Metacritic user scores sinking to just 2.4/10. For many players, it felt like the game lost the essence of what made Battlefield special.
These missteps prompted DICE to re-evaluate its direction. The studio decided to rebuild trust with the fanbase by returning to the fundamentals that had made earlier titles so popular. This shift in focus laid the foundation for Battlefield 6.
Returning to the Roots of Battlefield
In an interview with PCGamesN, DICE producer Jeremy Chubb highlighted that Battlefield 6 draws heavy inspiration from the series’ most beloved entries. “This game is much more in tune with what we built in Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4,” Chubb explained. “The DNA of those games is clearly visible in Battlefield 6.”
Both Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 are still remembered as high points in the franchise, thanks to their mix of tactical gameplay, large-scale battles, and engaging mechanics. By revisiting those elements, DICE hopes to deliver a more authentic experience that resonates with its core audience.
Community-Driven Development Through Battlefield Labs
A major change in the development process of Battlefield 6 was the introduction of Battlefield Labs, an initiative designed to bring players into the development cycle. According to Chubb, this program allowed the team to share early builds with fans and gather direct feedback. “We set out to work with the community. Sometimes we put quite rough versions of the game in front of players, but that journey gave us valuable insight,” he said.
The approach paid off. The overwhelming response from fans during the open beta gave the developers renewed confidence. Battlefield 6’s beta became the most-played in franchise history, peaking at over 473,000 concurrent players on Steam in its first weekend. For the studio, this was a clear signal that players are eager for a Battlefield game that feels tailored to them.
A Positive Outlook Ahead of Launch
Chubb believes the community’s passion has been a driving force in shaping Battlefield 6 into a game that truly reflects what fans want. “I don’t think we needed reminding that there are a lot of Battlefield fans out there,” he remarked. “But seeing their excitement and feedback reinforced why we’re building this experience.”
With its focus on fan collaboration, a return to the franchise’s proven gameplay style, and the buzz generated from its record-breaking beta, Battlefield 6 is shaping up to be one of the most important FPS releases of 2025. For both DICE and EA, the stakes are high—but the outlook is far more optimistic than it was with Battlefield 2042.
Now, all eyes are on October 10, when Battlefield 6 officially launches. Whether it will live up to the hype remains to be seen, but the foundation suggests this may finally be the game to restore the Battlefield franchise to its former glory.
