James Gunn Addresses the Pressure Around DCU’s Batman: “It’s About Story, Not Just the Suit”
The question of who will step into the cape and cowl as the DC Universe’s new Batman remains a mystery. What we do know, however, is who won’t be taking on the role. Robert Pattinson is locked into Matt Reeves’ standalone “Batman Epic Crime Saga,” while Alan Ritchson and Chris Pratt have both publicly ruled themselves out of the running. For now, DC fans are left speculating as James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, keeps his plans under wraps.
Earlier this year, Gunn admitted that Batman is his “biggest issue” in shaping the new DCU. His latest comments in an interview shed light on the enormous expectations surrounding the character and the sometimes overwhelming intensity of fan debates.
Why Fans Are Obsessed With Batman’s Look
During a conversation on the podcast 2 Bears, 1 Cave, Gunn was asked about the possibility of bringing the “blue and gray Batman” from the comics to the big screen. While many fans consider that version iconic, Gunn pointed out that preferences vary wildly. For every fan who demands the blue-and-gray costume, another insists it would be a terrible idea.
“There’s almost a religious aspect to it,” Gunn explained. “People argue over the smallest details—white eyes or no white eyes, a yellow utility belt or not, the crest design on his chest. But for me, none of those things matter as much as the story and the character.”
He went on to stress that the new Batman isn’t being designed around fan service, but around telling a meaningful and compelling story within the DCU framework. “We have a really, really good story now,” he teased, without revealing specifics.
The Bigger Picture: DCU’s Reboot Strategy
Under Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran, DC Studios is reshaping its film and television slate into a more connected universe. Their vision begins with Chapter 1, titled Gods and Monsters. Several major projects are already on the calendar, creating anticipation for what lies ahead.
- Peacemaker Season 2 (August 21, 2025): The hit antihero series returns with new conflicts, including a major villain teased by Gunn on social media.
- Supergirl (June 26, 2026): Starring Milly Alcock, this darker take on the Kryptonian hero explores her tragic upbringing on a shard of Krypton.
- Clayface (September 11, 2026): A horror-inspired film about the classic Batman villain, with James Watkins directing and Tom Rhys Harries in the lead.
- Man of Tomorrow (July 9, 2027): Gunn’s next project after Superman, likely featuring a Superman–Lex Luthor alliance against a greater threat.
This evolving lineup shows how carefully DC Studios is plotting its course, with Batman expected to play a key role in anchoring the larger universe.
Multiple Versions, One Icon
Gunn also emphasized that Batman’s strength lies in the many ways he has been interpreted over the decades. “Detective Batman, fighter Batman, even the campier Silver Age Batman—they’re all valid expressions of the character,” he said. “That’s what makes him iconic: he can be reimagined while still remaining instantly recognizable.”
However, Gunn was clear about what he doesn’t want: a purely comedic or campy Batman. While different tones have worked in the past, the DCU’s version will aim for something distinct from Reeves’ darker, crime-driven saga while avoiding the overly lighthearted approach of the 1960s TV show.
What This Means for the Next Batman
The next iteration of Batman will not exist just because he’s DC’s most bankable hero. Gunn insists that the character must serve a narrative purpose in the broader DCU. That means Batman will be defined not by the color of his suit, but by the story that demands his presence.
For now, fans will have to wait for casting news and more official details. But one thing is clear: James Gunn is determined to deliver a Batman who matters—not just one who looks good on a poster.
