The Lost Star Wars Game That Could Have Changed Everything

When it comes to the Star Wars universe, few timelines are as mysterious and captivating as the Old Republic era. While the films only ever hinted at it in passing, fans know this period holds some of the richest storytelling potential in the entire franchise.

It’s no surprise then that BioWare chose this timeline for their groundbreaking RPG Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR), followed by its Obsidian-developed sequel. Both titles received overwhelming praise and cemented themselves as cult classics. Yet, despite their success, a third installment never materialized—leaving fans to wonder about the saga’s unfinished legacy.

And as it turns out, what we missed might have been one of the most epic Star Wars games ever conceived.

The Vision for KOTOR 3

In a 2019 interview with VG247, former Obsidian writer Chris Avellone shed light on what the team had planned for KOTOR 3. He revealed that the game would have followed the player as they tracked Revan’s journey and ultimately faced off against the ancient Sith Lords—beings even more terrifying than any Darth introduced in the films or games.

“These guys would have been absolute monsters,” Avellone explained. “They had unimaginable power, but at the same time, players would explore their psychology, personalities, and dark histories.”

For long-time fans, this was more than just another storyline. It was a chance to dive deep into the heart of Star Wars mythology and confront villains who were as complex as they were dangerous.

Fans Still Long for the Sequel

Even years later, the community hasn’t stopped voicing their passion for a proper conclusion to the series. On Reddit, one fan argued, “Disney needs to declare KOTOR 1 and 2 canon, drop the MMO, and let Obsidian create KOTOR 3. Revan and the Exile deserve the ending they were promised.”

Another added, “This is why I was frustrated with SWTOR. They rushed into the MMO market instead of giving us the true sequel we wanted. KOTOR 2 never felt like a real ending.”

And perhaps the most heartfelt comment came from a lifelong fan who wrote, “It breaks my heart that KOTOR 3 was never made. These games are Star Wars to me, and hearing about what it could have been just makes the loss harder.”

A Glimmer of Hope?

While the dream of an official KOTOR 3 may never come true, hope isn’t completely lost. The much-anticipated remake of the original game has reignited interest in the Old Republic. If handled properly, it could pave the way for fans to finally get some of the closure they’ve been waiting for.

Whether that comes through expanded storylines in the remake or a fresh continuation down the road, one thing is clear: the Star Wars community is still hungry for Revan’s saga to reach its true conclusion.

Until then, KOTOR remains one of the greatest what-ifs in gaming history—an unfinished masterpiece that continues to spark imagination and discussion among fans worldwide.
